From haunted historic buildings to restless spirits, Puerto Rico has a treasure trove of ghostly tales that have been passed down through generations.

- The Ghostly Guard of Castillo San Felipe del Morro
Perched majestically on the cliffs overlooking San Juan Bay, Castillo San Felipe del Morro, also known as El Morro, is a 16th-century fort that has stood as a sentinel for centuries. Within its ancient walls, there are numerous reports of ghostly apparitions. One of the most famous is that of the “Lady in Blue.” Legend has it that she was the wife of a Spanish soldier who died defending the fort. Visitors have claimed to see her wandering the corridors in her blue dress, sometimes with a melancholic expression, as if still mourning her lost love.
In addition to the Lady in Blue, the spirits of soldiers from various periods are said to haunt the fort. Some claim to hear phantom footsteps echoing through the halls, and others have reported seeing shadowy figures on the battlements, even though no living person was present.
- The Cursed Ceiba Tree of Ponce
Ponce, the second-largest city in Puerto Rico, is home to the legendary Ceiba de Ponce, a massive Ceiba tree that stands over 50 feet tall. This ancient tree has long been considered sacred, but it is also said to be cursed. According to local folklore, the tree is inhabited by spirits that protect it. Some believe that disturbing the tree or showing disrespect towards it can bring misfortune or illness.
Locals tell stories of individuals who disregarded the warnings and suffered unfortunate fates. It’s said that the spirits of the Ceiba guard it vigilantly, and those who harm the tree or its surroundings may face supernatural consequences.
- The Haunting of Teatro Tapia
Teatro Tapia, located in the heart of Old San Juan, is one of Puerto Rico’s oldest and most iconic theaters. It is known for its stunning architecture and rich history, but it is also rumored to be haunted. The most famous ghostly inhabitant of Teatro Tapia is a woman named “La Dama de Tapia.” She is said to be a former actress who met a tragic end and now roams the theater’s halls, sometimes appearing on stage during performances.
Actors and staff have reported mysterious occurrences, such as lights flickering, unexplained sounds, and the feeling of a presence backstage. Some even claim to have seen the ghostly figure of La Dama de Tapia dressed in elegant 19th-century attire.
- The Ghost Ship of San Juan Bay

One of the most famous is the story of the “Ghost Ship of San Juan Bay.” According to local lore, a Spanish galleon, laden with treasures, disappeared in the 18th century during a hurricane. It is said that the ghostly ship can still be seen sailing through the mist on stormy nights, with ghostly sailors working tirelessly on deck.
Though no physical evidence of the ship’s existence has been found, the legend lives on, captivating the imaginations of locals and visitors alike.
5. Jacinto’s Well
There is a natural well in Playa Jobos, Isabela which is known as El Pozo de Jacinto or Jacinto’s Well. Legend says that there was a farmer named Jacinto who took out his cows to eat around that area. Jacinto held his cows with a rope that he secured around his waist. During a rainy day, one of the cows was scared of the thunder and ran until it fell inside the well taking Jacinto too.
Nowadays, if you step close to the well and shout “Jacinto dame la vaca” the waves hit harder the rocks around it. The legend also says that you need to shout in Spanish since, Jacinto never learned English while he was alive so he doesn’t understand any other language.
Puerto Rico, with its deep-rooted history and vibrant culture, is also a place where the past seems to echo in the present. The island’s ghost stories are a testament to its rich and diverse heritage, where tales of love, loss, tragedy, and mystery continue to captivate those who dare to explore its haunted past.
