Iconic Area 51 black mailbox ranch up for sale

A ranch made famous for its black mailbox and proximity to the secretive US base is now available for purchase. There are few places on Earth as notoriously secretive as Area 51 – a remote facility in the Nevada desert that has become synonymous with stories of reverse-engineered alien technology and the development of highly advanced black projects that next to nobody knows anything about.

Despite efforts to keep people away from the facility however, an entire culture has sprung up around it, making household names of some of the places and attractions in its vicinity. One of these – the black mailbox (which is actually white) – is situated on Highway 375 (otherwise known as the Extraterrestrial Highway) at the 80-acre Medlin Ranch in Nevada’s Tikaboo Valley.

The original (genuinely) black mailbox had generated so much attention that its owners were eventually forced to take it down and replace it with a more secure alternative. Despite the fact that the new one is white instead of black, the original name stuck and continues to be used even to this day.

The ranch, which is the only available property bordering the infamous base, is now on sale for $4.5 million, however it is unclear if it will go to new private owners or if the US government will take advantage of this opportunity to expand the existing restricted land around Area 51.

Medlin even has a pre-existing agreement giving him limited access to the restricted zone to enable him to tend his cattle, so long as he makes a radio call to announce his presence in advance.

Whether this would extend to the new owners of the ranch however remains unclear.

  1. Fun fact. My Dad worked at Area 51 for a while. Some sort of security, but there was a lot he couldn’t talk about. He did say no aliens were there. Crap ton of nukes, though.
